Gabriel Jose Garcia Marquez was born on March 6,1928 in Aracataca, a town in Northem Colombia, where he was reised by his maternal grandoparents in a house filled with countless aunts and the rumors of ghosts. Although Gabriel comes from a poor family, he has been so important in our country since he has been one of the best writers through the history of Colombia. He has been a well- known journalist, novelist and short story writer, a central figure in the so called MAgic Journalist movement. Among his most remarkable achivements can be mentioned that he has got lots of literature awards because of his excellent works. Throughout his career, García Márquez has won numerous awards and honors for his work, including the 1982 nobel prize un literature for the novel called "cien años de soledad (1967)", which was later translated as one hundred years of solitude. In 1955 he won a prize from the Bogota Association of writers and artists for "un dia despues del sabado"("one day after the saturday")one of the stories that would be published in the collection, los funerales de mamá grande "big mama´s funeral 1961" he won the "premio literario Esso" award in Colombia for "la mala hora" Gabriel Garcia Marquez grew up with his maternal grandparent his grandfather was a pensioned colonel from the civil war at the beginning of the century nicknamed Gabito, little Gabriel grew up as a quiet and shy lad, entranced by his grand father´s stories and his grandmother´s supertitions.
